Coming Events:

Student Send-Off Party

The U of M Club of Hillsdale county will be hosting an informal get-together to meet the incoming freshmen at the home of Penny Grieling and gary barber.  We would lover to have a huge turnout of alumni to wish them well as they begin their new adventure.  This is also a great way for new students, their parents, returning student and alumni from our area to get acquainted.  Wednesday, August 20, 7-9 p.m. 2583 Winona Drive.  Please rsvp to Kathy Adams bkadams33@gmailcom 517.849.9202 by August 15 if you will be attending.

Our club has two annual fall events with the Michigan State Alumni Club of Hillsdale around the football date between the two universities. One is the PEP RALLY at the Hillsdale Golf and Country Club, and the other is the UM/MSU BLOOD DRIVE.

Pep Rally:  The two clubs have shared this fun event for 20 years or more with plentiful hors d'oeuvres and a speaker about sports. Money left after paying the country club for the Rally each year is donated to the scholarship funds of the two clubs according to their respective attendance.. For 2008, our club will be guests of the MSU Club. It includes wearing our respective school colors, sharing friendly banter, food, cash beverages, and a program presented by the host club. We will post details when we receive the information from their group. In 2007, our U-M club sponsored the event. Our topic was Michigan Rowing, with men's head coach Gregg Hartsuff as the speaker. The program was very informative and enjoyable.
Blood Drive:  The other joint venture is the U-M/MSU Challenge blood drive, where alumni and friends of Michigan donate a pint of blue blood against State's green blood! After having tied in 2005 and "lost" by several donors in 2006, we "won" in 2007 by a good margin. Of course, the real winners are the Red Cross and the patients needing transfusions.

Other Events:

Winter Sports  --  For a number of years, we have gathered a group to attend one or more men's basketball games. It has become more difficult to get people to commit and buy tickets ahead; we have recently had trouble selling even 10 or 12 pre-purchased group tickets so have discontinued the group outings. We would welcome suggestions or help with arrangements and might also consider other winter sports. Please contact a board member, listed below.

Other Possibilities  --  We may have a dinner with speaker sometime in the winter or spring, OR a trip to a NON-athletic event on campus. If you have ideas for such a gathering, feel free to contact one of the board members, who are listed below!

Board Meetings  --  Periodic meetings of the club board are held to form plans for upcoming events. In between, we confer by e-mail or phone to discuss matters. Anyone interested in joining the board or contributing to the club in any other way is encouraged to contact any board member, listed below.

Student Event  --  Our student events are very popular and much appreciated. Click the link to our Scholarship page for the story of our most recent Student Sendoff party! In different years, we have held them in May, June, or August. We have had picnics, desserts, or hors d'oeuvres. We have had informal or more formal gatherings. Let us know of your suggestions, preferences, or willingness to help!

Getting Information Out

We try to report club news in several ways. Those whose e-mail addresses are in University and/or club files are our best-informed alumni, friends, and fans. The monthly regional issue of e-TrueBlue, which is disseminated by AAUM to all e-mailing members on the last Friday of most months, usually has at least one paragraph from our club.

We have a "listserv" set up with all currently known alumni e-mail addresses in our assigned area, which consists of Hillsdale County and western Lenawee. Club secretary Terri Addison uses the listserv to send out newsletters several times a year. If you receive an e-mail from UMHillsdaleClub@umich.edu, that is from our club. If you would like to be added to this e-mailing list, simply write to taddsn@umich.edu and you will be added. Of course, there is an opt-out note at the end of each message; therefore, if you get tired of hearing from us, you can end the service.

We also send out a postal mailing once or twice a year, to reach those who have no e-mail service or choose not to receive our information electronically.

Volunteer Positions Open

Board Trustees (Members-at-large)  -  The club needs new faces on our Board. Time commitment for occasional meetings is small, and fresh ideas are always welcome!

Web Master  -  As you have probably noticed, we sorely need a person with these capabilities to dress up our Web site!!! The club web master is responsible for updating the club's site on a monthly basis using CMS Made Simple, a content management system. Prior knowledge of this software is not required. Knowledge of HTML is also not required but could be helpful. CMS Made Simple works with either Internet Explorer 6.0, Netscape, or Firefox. (For Mac users, Safari supports HTML but not the WYSIWYG editor.)

Events Coordinator

  -  The club needs someone to organize details for events we might have, such as the above-mentioned Pep Rally when it is our turn, as well as other planned or dreamed events. We would most likely have a greater number of fun and worthwhile club activities if we had such a person (or persons) to coordinate them.
Please contact one of the above-mentioned officers for more information about these positions or about our club.
